What does the
Paris Agreement mean?

The Paris Agreement is a global legally binding climate agreement that entered into force in 2016.

The Paris Agreement agreed the world's nations to work together to combat the climate crisis by 2050:

  • Keeping the increase in global average temperature well below 2 degrees, with the aim of not exceeding 1.5 degrees.
  • Increasing adaptive capacity for the adverse effects of climate change.
  • Adapting financial flows to be compatible with greenhouse gas emission reductions.

Today, 194 parties (193 countries plus the EU) have signed the agreement. This means that about 98% of man-made greenhouse gas emissions are covered by the agreement.

Each country is responsible for its own climate action. Countries must submit their national climate plans to the UN. Every five years, the countries must jointly review the progress of their climate work and adjust their climate plans accordingly.
