What are planetary boundaries?

The concept of planetary boundaries represents nine quantitative planetary limits within which humanity can continue to develop and thrive on Earth for generations to come. It is a concept developed by a group of researchers led by Johan Rockström at the Stockholm Resilience Center. If these limits are exceeded, the risk of large-scale sudden or irreversible environmental change increases.

The planetary boundary that is most exceeded is biodiversity. This is because species are becoming extinct at an unnaturally high rate, as a result of human activity. The climate threat is in third place, but is the threat currently receiving the most attention.

Below are the boundaries included and their status according to the research team.
